Jeremy Mighton Promoted to Deputy Chief

The Saugeen Shores Police Service Board is pleased to announce that Jeremy Mighton is the new Deputy Chief of Police for the Saugeen Shores Police Service.

The internal process to select a Deputy Chief included consideration of education, experience, qualifications as well as the potential to realize necessary competencies as determined by the Board and represented by candidates during a formal interview process.

The five-member Board, comprised of two members of Council, a Council-appointed citizen and two provincial appointees, is unanimous in their support of the candidate selected.

Inspector Mighton received, in April 2024, Canada’s Exemplary Service Medal in recognition of his extensive 21 year career in law enforcement which began with the Guelph Police Service and continued with five years service as a Hanover Police constable before he joined the Saugeen Shores Police Service (SSPS) in 2011. Within the SSPS, the Inspector rose through the ranks while progressively expanding his involvement in investigative activity, supervision, operational management and human resources aspects of policing as he was promoted to Sergeant in 2016 and to Inspector in 2021.

In addition to his graduation from the Ontario Police College, Inspector Mighton has achieved an honours Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and Immunology from Western University and a Funeral Service Diploma from Humber College. Outside of policing his interests lie first and foremost with his family. They have lived in the Grey-Bruce area for over 40 years where he has enjoyed coaching and playing various sports, playing guitar and outdoor adventures of many kinds.

“His background in uniformed patrol and community policing as well as extensive experience in major crime investigations matched with his commitment to public safety within Saugeen Shores and the dedication he shows toward frontline officers, civilian staff, and community and regional policing partners will very significantly enhance the Senior Officer ranks of the SSPS”, according to Board Chair and Deputy Mayor, Diane Huber.

Police Chief Kevin Zettel adds, “I am excited that the Saugeen Shores Police Service Board has taken the lead to appoint, from within our ranks, Jeremy Mighton as the Deputy Chief of Police. This is an important step forward in our commitment to enhancing the safety, trust, and well-being of our community. This new leadership role will play a vital part as we navigate the evolving challenges of modern policing while strengthening community engagement, training, and public service.”

In welcoming the addition of another Senior Officer, the Chief continued, “I look forward to the continued progress as we work together, alongside our dedicated officers and support members, to achieve the goals set forth in our strategic plan. With the promotion of Deputy Chief Mighton, we will continue to build on successes already achieved, and be prepared for new opportunities, ensuring that our police service remains responsive, innovative, and compassionate. Together, we will continue to serve our community with integrity and commitment, making meaningful strides toward a safer, more inclusive future.”

Deputy Chief Jeremy Mighton will begin his duties on December 29th, 2024 and says, “I am honoured to have been given this opportunity, and look forward to continuing to work with the members of the Saugeen Shores Police Service and the community of Saugeen Shores. I am committed to progressive leadership, continued learning and operational excellence, and am ready for the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.”

The Board is confident according to Chair Huber, “that Deputy Chief Mighton’s appointment, along with recently signed contract agreements, investments in the health and safety of members, an Inspector appointment in the near future, and revisions to the Police Strategic Plan in 2025, strategically positions the Saugeen Shores Police Service to provide adequate and effective policing as determined by provincial legislation and be appropriately responsive and accountable to the Saugeen Shores community.”

The official swearing-in ceremony for Deputy Chief Mighton will be held on January 29th, 2025 at the Police Station in Port Elgin.
