Media Release – Impaired Driving and Drug Offences

Incident 1 – Impaired Driving

On October 23rd at 3:52pm officers received a report of a male consuming liquor at a licenced establishment in Southampton.  The male was observed to be unsteady on his feet and enter a vehicle. He was observed drive to a motel and park his vehicle.

Officers arrived on scene and located the male’s vehicle parked near motel units.  The male was located a short distance away in a unit. Upon speaking to the male, officers detected signs of alcohol consumption.  A roadside breath test was administered, resulting in a “fail”  He was placed under arrest and transported to the station for an Intoxilyzer breath test.

At the station the male provided two samples:

  1. 220 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood
  2. 210 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood

A 63  year old Southampton man has been charged with

Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration

His driver’s licence was administratively suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days.  He was released with a court date.

 

Incident 2 – Impaired Driving by Drug and Drug Possession

On October 23rd  at 9:10pm a vehicle was observed driving in the area of Wellington Street and River Street.  The operator of the vehicle committed a series of Highway Traffic Act offences.

A vehicle stop was conducted and the male driver was found to be subject to a driver’s licence suspension. He was placed under arrest.  During a search incident to arrest officers located a quantity of suspected crystal methamphetamine.  The male was transported to the station for further investigation.

While at the station officers, who had a suspicion that the male was impaired by drugs, conducted a Standard Field Sobriety Test.  The male performed poorly during this analysis.  As a result a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) was utilized to evaluate the male’s sobriety. 

The DRE conducted a variety of tests on the male and determined that his ability was impaired by drug to operate a motor vehicle.

A 46 year old Port Elgin has been charged with:

  1. Possession of Schedule 1 substance – Methamphetamine
  2. Possession of Schedule 1 Substance – Opioid
  3. Operation while impaired – Drugs
  4. Drive Motor vehicle – No Licence
  5. Stop Sign – fail to stop

The male was issued 90 day driver’s licence suspension and the vehicle he was driving was impounded for seven days.  He was released on a promise appear and an undertaking given to an officer in charge.
